Voting for name and scope of EAPLS

In the period November 1 - November 30 the scope and name of EAPLS have been determined by means of a voting procedure based on the following message. This message has been mailed to the EAPLS mailing list on Tuesday, October 31, 1995.

Dear colleague,

your are invited to help in determing the scope and name of EAPLS
by the voting procedure outlined below.

Voting will start on Wednesday, November 1 and will end Thursday, 
November 30. For further details and background information we
refer you to the EAPLS home WWW page:

It is important to reach a representative part of the researchers
working in the proposed areas to be covered by EAPLS. Therefore
we seek your help and ask you to draw the attention of colleague
researchers to this voting procedure.

There are 3 scopes and 3 names to choose from. You can vote by
completing the voting form at the end of this message with a number
from 1 (low preference) to 5 (high preference) for each scope/name
on the list. The scope/name combination with the highest total wins.

Choices for the scope
=====================

S1: Original EAPLS scope
    ``The Association pursues exclusively and directly purposes in
    the public interest with the goals of promoting science in the 
    area of programming languages and systems hereafter called
    Programming, which covers all aspects of programming and 
    includes theory, language design (all paradigms), language 
    implementation, and language use (program design, software 
    engineering).''

S2: Scope extended with software development with emphasis on 
    formal methods (proposed by Reinhard Wilhelm)
    ``The Association pursues exclusively and directly purposes in
    the public interest with the goals of promoting science in the
    area of programming languages and software development, including
    in particular all paradigms of programming languages and their
    theory, design, implementation and use, and formal methods with
    their foundations and supporting tools.''

S3: Scope extended with software systems (proposed by Egidio 
    Astesiano):
    ``The Association pursues exclusively and directly purposes in 
    the public interest with the goals of promoting science in the 
    area of the development of software systems, which covers all 
    aspects related to  software specification, design, 
    implementation and use, including in particular all paradigms 
    of programming languages (theory, design, implementation and 
    use) and formal methods with their foundations and supporting 
    tools.''
