Call for a PhD student and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Data-Driven Software Engineering to improve Software Security

by Leon Moonen, Dec. 21, 2020

Simula Research Laboratory is seeking outstanding candidates for full-time 3-year PhD positions and full-time 2.5-year Postdoctoral Research Fellow positions in Data-Driven Software Engineering to improve Software Security. The appointment is available immediately and a review of candidates will be performed continuously until the position has been filled.

Project Description: The positions are funded by the Norwegian Research Council via the IKTPLUSS project secureIT. The overall goal of the project is to devise intelligent methods and techniques that will help software engineers predict the vulnerability of source code during development. More concretely, we will investigate the use of data-driven techniques to improve vulnerability prediction based on vulnerability smells and security anti-patterns, and conduct anomaly-based vulnerability prediction.

About Simula: Simula Research Laboratory AS is a publicly owned research institute located at Fornebu outside of Oslo, Norway. Simula is a multi-cultural organization, employing about 150 individuals from 29 countries. Simula conducts Information and Communication Technology (ICT) research in the fields of communication technology, scientific computing and software engineering. Since its start in 2001, scientific evaluations have consistently placed Simula at the forefront of international research in ICT. The official working language at Simula is English.  Oslo is a small but vibrant European capital, uniquely surrounded by forests and hills offering unsurpassed natural beauty, a high quality of life, and the occasional troll. The city and its surroundings boast a wide range of cultural and recreational activities, such as exceptional hiking and cross-country skiing opportunities within 30 minutes of the city center by subway.

Simula offers, amongst others:
* excellent opportunities for performing high-quality research, as part of a highly competent and motivated team of international collaborators;
* an informal and inclusive international working environment;
* generous support for travels and equipment (incl. laptop, phone, and electronic communication subscriptions);
* a competitive salary, with a starting salary from 535.200 NOK/yr and numerous benefits.

Candidate Profile: Both positions require a background in Computer Science, with specialization in Software Engineering, Software Security, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related direction. Note that the PhD position requires an MSc degree, and the Postdoctoral position requires a PhD degree. Interested candidates are expected to be self-motivated, organized, eager to work on challenging research problems, and keen to communicate their results to others. Moreover, they should demonstrate an excellent level of spoken and written English, possess solid analytical and programming skills, show good interpersonal and communication skills, and a willingness to work as part of an international team. Experienced PostDocs, who can combine work in the project with contributing to securing follow-up funding, are particularly encouraged to apply and may be offered a permanent position as a follow-up. Simula is an equal opportunity employer, and women are particularly encouraged to apply.
