The Institute for Control Engineering of Machine Tools and Manufacturing Units (ISW) of the University of Stuttgart offers a

PhD Student Vacancy in the research area of
Systematic Software Language Engineering

“The limits of my language mean the limits of my world”.

This insight formulated in 1918 by the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein also holds for today’s software languages. Many domain concepts cannot be expressed in these languages, which raises a gap between the knowledge of domain experts and software engineering. Domain-specific languages (DSLs) aim to reduce this gap by providing domain concepts within the language.Creating DSLs and corresponding software tools is a sophisticated challenge due to the complexity of DSL implementations, limitations of modularization, reuse, and variation management techniques for DSLs.In this research project, novel concepts and methods for the compositional development of DSLs shall be investigated, realized, and evaluated with languages from systems engineering (such as SysML v2).
