FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Hunter College of The City University of New York (CUNY) seeks a dynamic individual to lead the Department of Computer Science, in the position of Chair, starting from the 2025-2026 academic year (starting in January 2025, if possible).
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Manhattan's 68th Street,Hunter College is the largest college in the City University of New York (CUNY). Founded in 1870, it is also one of the oldest public colleges in the country. More than 23,000 students currently attend Hunter, pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 170 areas of study. Hunter College's Computer Science Department is the fastest growing department at Hunter College, graduating over 300 students annually. We are dedicated to providing students with exceptional preparation for both their professional endeavors and future graduate studies. Our diverse, research-active faculty members foster an open and collaborative atmosphere, encouraging students to develop creative solutions to challenging problems across various contexts. With a curriculum focused on hands-on programming skills,computer systems,and the fundamental mathematics of computer science, we empower students to thrive in today's rapidly evolving tech landscape.
The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding skills in leadership, teaching, and research, and will apply those skills to lead department strategic planning, including expansion of the faculty; promote an effective educational experience for a diverse student body; support faculty development; and expand research programs. The Chair will serve as a mentor for faculty and staff, advocate for the department within the broader college context, and facilitate collaborations with other units in the college. The Chair is expected to commit to at least two terms (equivalent to six years) in this role.
Requirements include a terminal degree and the current academic rank of Full Professor (preferred) or Associate Professor with tenure. Candidates with outstanding academic and research experience but who currently work in a non-academic environment in a position with substantial leadership experience are also encouraged to apply. A strong record of research, excellent communication skills, and successful teaching experience are required. Experience in a large urban public university is not required, but desirable. The Chair will be appointed a faculty member in the department, with a competitive salary commensurate with experience.
Faculty in the Department of Computer Science at Hunter College are generally afforded membership in the doctoral faculty of the Computer Science Program at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, which enables them to teach doctoral level courses and mentor Ph.D. students.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related discipline
Outstanding leadership and administrative skills
Strong educational background including research/scholarship
Committed to quality undergraduate and graduate education
Preferred:
Experience in leadership in a large, urban, public university
A vision for growing the department
The ability to build strong relationships with other academic departments, the School of Arts & Sciences, and other CUNY campuses
The ability to build strong relationships with external constituencies including potential students, alumni, nonprofit organizations, and corporations
COMPENSATION
Salary at the top level of the CUNY professorial scale, with the possibility for salary above scale. Department chairs receive summer salary.
Associate Professor: 117,805
Professor: $141,858
